Tatiana Efremova is a scholar of Soviet and post-Soviet Russian literature, film, and
media culture. She received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, with emphasis in Slavic
Studies and a minor in film, at New York University.
Her current book project Beyond Nostalgia: Remediating the Soviet Body in Russian
Culture under Putin (2000-2022), looks beyond the state monopoly on the Soviet past in search
of alternative ways of processing the Soviet downfall in contemporary film, fashion, multimedia
, and performance art. Areas of related teaching and research interests include gender theory,
the history of global feminism, cultural forms of protest, social media, and cultural consumption. Dr.
Efremova produced and co-hosted the video podcast Scholarly ZEIT GUEST covering emerging
trends in Slavic Studies, for the Harriman Institute at Columbia University, where she was a
