The GW German Program refined my language skills and culture knowledge so that I was well prepared to study abroad in Freiburg im Breisgau during the Spring 2019 semester. GW’s German faculty pushed me to expand my academic horizons and apply for the GW Undergraduate Research Fellowship, which I was awarded and used to fund travel through Germany, researching the plays and places of playwright Friedrich Schiller. Upon my return to GW, I continued the project with the assistance of a German faculty mentor, shaping my research into a cohesive senior thesis. The German faculty worked closely with me to make sure my study abroad credit transferred back so that I was able to complete my double major, Honors Program requirements, and graduation in four years. GW’s German program is an encouraging, supportive, high-achieving group of students and staff :)

Taking German at GW was one of the best choices I ever made!! Not only did I improve my language skills to fluency, but I also met some of my favorite professors, studied abroad and got credit for all my courses, worked 3 different jobs where I used my language skills, and I met some of the closest friends I made at GW!!! In my senior year I was even awarded a Fulbright in Germany! Take one course and I know you’ll be hooked!!

Majoring in German Studies and working with the German Department was one of the best decisions. The faculty in the department provided unparalleled support and mentorship, and fostered a lifelong passion for German Studies. They were instrumental in many of the opportunities I was afforded, a short-term study abroad program to Berlin and the Luther Rice Undergraduate Fellowship, which allowed me to spend a month in Germany conducting research for my thesis. The professors I worked with were knowledgeable, kind, and drew upon impressive experiences in their fields to make every class a truly memorable experience. I will always cherish my time with the department, and know that the professors I worked with had a large role in my post-graduate success.
